Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #9 with Dr. (James) Matt Whitfield

So, this is a long-time coming. There was a high-pitch noise that was in some of the recordings I did last summer with Ryno. I haven't been working on getting that out for the last nine months, but it did take some time. Better late than never, and since we are trying to figure out what to do with our standard music show, I thought this was a perfect Friday to release this show!

Also, I missed an obvious chance to say "That's cool, Daddio!"

This week on the Jazzcast we have something a little bit different. It's a joint Lawcast/Jazzcast show! Listen to some sweet jazz selections from Gurdonark and me and maybe learn something along the way.

If you want to hear more from Robert, check out The Jazzcast After Party or you can check out when Tom and I had him on the main Music Manumit show. Thanks, as always on the Jazzcast, to Ryno for twiddling the knobs!

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #8 with Jürgen and Toni

In an effort to get you to check out Jürgen's playlist app, I'm not gonna give you the track listing. I'm just going to link to the two playlists made. Here's the shortened one after I said the first was too long. Ryno got confused and suggested some tracks from the original playlist, and we ended up playing one of them, so you need that one too. If any of the license information is missing from the playlist, just leave a comment here and I'll poke Jürgen about it.

Make sure you listen to the actual show here though for the talkie-bits.

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #7 with Edy The Mighty

Evan Whitfield in New Orleans

Edy is now among an elite group of Music Manumit guests which I have actually met in person. Edy and I met in The Birthplace of Jazz, New Orleans.

For anyone curious, the elite list includes Stephen, Mike Nutt, Paul Jones, (Lawcast, and future Punkcast guest) Pete Prodoehl, Nick Clark and, of course, (future Jazzcast guest) my dad.

So, things did not go as planned in this episode. We got a high pitch hum throughout the show. It does seem to affect the music though, so you can still enjoy that, even if you can't listen to the talking.

Thanks, as always, to Ryno for twiddling the knobs! (and thanks for rooting out the cause of the hum!)

Oh, and if you're wondering where Episode #6 is, well, I had some editing problems with it too. I still think I can fix those though. And, if you're wondering why it took me so long to get this out, I have had some shoulder and wrist pain I've been dealing with.

Notes I took during the show after the break.

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #5 with Kevin MacLeod

Find more at the FMA

mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent

After a crazy wedding weekend, the 4th of July (well, technically, it's not after the 4th right now) and recording a couple more shows, I'm finally getting out the show that should have been out on Monday. Oh well.

Last week's guest, Kevin MacLeod, has his own Wikipedia page. You might learn some things to add to the page during this week's show. If you don't find anything new, you'll definitely find something on Ryno's Jazzcast After Party. And if you're looking for his complete catalog, check out http://incompetech.com/.

All tracks on the show are by Kevin and are released under CC BY (Attribution)

Thanks as always, to Ryno, for twiddling the knobs.

See below the fold for the puny show notes I took during the show.

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #4 with Andrea from the FMA

Andrea on Twitter

On this week's Jazzcast, we have Andrea, from the Free Music Archive. Of course, all of her tracks are featured on the FMA! If you prefer to just listen to the music and not us talking, you can check out Andrea's playlist.

I should also mention that we had some serious problems with Skype this show. The music still sounds great, but there might be some weird edits with the discussion between tracks.

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #3 with Marc, aka Amsterdammack

Amsterdammack

I once again struggled to take show notes, listen to music and guide the show. Things went a lot better technically that the first Jazzcast though and we were able to get you a full jazzcast, really, for the first time. Enjoy!

Thanks to Ryno for twiddling the knobs! Listen to Marc and Ryno on Unformatted: The Jazzcast After Party.

Here's the jazz and journalism lecture we discuss.

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #2 with Ryno The Bearded

Its A Cat Conspiracy
It's a Cat Conspiracy

This week on the Jazzcast is a bit different, mostly because it's not all jazz, but also because it's much longer than the usual week.

UPDATE: IT'S ALSO DIFFERENT BECAUSE THERE ARE -ND TRACKS. THERE WAS ALREADY A DISCLAIMER AT THE BOTTOM BUT PEOPLE DON'T SEEM TO BE READING IT. ONLY REMIXABLE TRACKS ARE ALLOWED ON MUSIC MANUMIT. THIS WAS A JOINT SHOW, NOT A PURE MUSIC MANUMIT SHOW. THAT IS THE ONLY REASON THERE ARE ANY -ND TRACKS.

At 29 tracks, I can see why Ryno doesn't prepare show notes every week...

* Normally we don't play tracks that are not remixable, but since I was a guest on Ryno's show, he played some -ND tracks. Aside from that, I'm not going to give you any clues as to who picked what. Listening to the show will help.
** All things considered, I think this is by the band Imperial Tiger Orchestra, but I couldn't figure out the track title, so I'm leaving it as FMA has it.

Jazzcast Summer Series: Episode #1 with Craig Maloney

CC BY-NC-SA

 mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent

Yesterday, May 23rd, Craig of the Open Metalcast and Doug did a live Jazzcast on Google Hangout and on Ryno's 24/7 stream. It was an experiment...that failed. Everyone got to enjoy 5 awesome tracks though.

I (Doug) am not sure what is next for the jazzcast. Next week is a short week in the states due to Memorial Day and Craig and I moved things up a week. Thus, no Jazzcast next week. After that though, I plan on releasing weekly Jazzcasts.

I'm also doing a bi-weekly Punkcast series. The first show for that has been recorded with David Rovics and should be released in the coming days. The next Punkcast guest is Louis Lingg and the Bombs. If you want, you can follow the changing schedule. The color coding on the schedule means something to me. Maybe I'll get a key up eventually.

Please let me know if you'd be interested in coming on the show either as a guest that loves jazz or as musician that records jazz. I'd also like to know how people would like to consume the show. Is Google Hangout a waste? Do you like interviews more than guest hosts? Let me know!

Anyway, enough yapping, below is the music. I didn't bother recreating the banter Craig and I had because due to technical details, there wasn't much. Actually, the intro went well on the Google Hangout side, so we'll start off with that.

As you can see, Craig loves Magnatune.

Craig's Picks
"wallawalla" by Drop Trio (funk jazz) - CC-BY-NC-SA - Website
"Rhodes Rage" by Kerry Politzer (jazz pianist) - CC-BY-NC-SA - Website
"Cliffhanger" by Eternal Jazz Project (jazz quintet) - CC-BY-NC-SA - Website
"Turtle Spin" by Thursday Group (progressive jazz) - CC-BY-NC-SA - Website
"Quilt On The Grass" by Park St Trio (melodic jazz) - CC-BY-NC-SA - Website
